About Khan Academy Kids

Khan Academy Kids is a free and engaging learning program for children aged two to eight. Featuring characters like Kodi Bear, it offers a personalized educational journey with fun, standards-aligned activities in early literacy, math, executive functioning, and social-emotional skills. Developed by a dedicated team, it's used by millions of children worldwide in homes and classrooms.

The Role

The Khan Academy Kids team is seeking a passionate, driven, and tech-savvy Senior Product Designer to make a significant impact on young children and their families. This is a 12-month contract position with the possibility of converting to full-time based on business needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to all stages of design projects, from conceptualization to implementation, creating production-ready artwork.
  • Translate user research insights into wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity visual designs for mobile and web products.
  • Craft engaging visuals and joyful user experiences for young children, parents, and teachers.
  • Participate in the creation and maintenance of shared design patterns and systems.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, artists, animators, and developers to refine product features.

What You Bring:

  • Experience:
    • 6+ years of relevant experience on an in-house product design team.
    • Proven experience designing mobile and web consumer products at scale.
    • Strong preference for prior experience designing for e-learning/edtech products, including reports for educators, schools, and district administrators.
    • Experience driving your own design process from problem definition to solution delivery.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Figma.
    • Proficiency in interaction design, prototyping, and information architecture.
    • Outstanding visual design and UI/UX skills.
    • Adaptability and ability to manage multiple design projects in a changing environment.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bonus Points:
    • Prior experience conducting user research (focus groups, interviews, usability testing, etc.).
    • Web development skills (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
    • Illustration, animation, and/or video production skills.
  • Motivation:
    • Passion for early childhood education and children's media.
    • Attentiveness to what kids and families find fun and effective.
