Senior Autonomy Systems Engineer
Motional- Full Time
- Senior (5 to 8 years)
Candidates should possess an undergraduate degree, with a Master's or PhD in an engineering discipline preferred, and a minimum of five years of experience in the automotive, robotics, aerospace, or related industries. They should have experience contributing to the development of a safety case for autonomous vehicles, along with expertise in utilizing simulation and real-world testing to make readiness decisions. Strong knowledge of relevant safety methods and standards, such as STPA, SOTIF (ISO 21448), and/or UL 4600, is required, alongside proficiency in mathematics, engineering, and physics, and skills in data analysis using tools like Python or Matlab. Excellent communication skills are also necessary to convey complex concepts effectively.
The Senior/Staff Systems Engineer will lead the creation, documentation, alignment, and execution of conflict avoidance and rules of the road within Waabi’s broader safety framework to support driverless readiness decisions. They will define comprehensive verification coverage using Waabi’s simulator to verify driving behaviors, and develop quantitative metrics to evaluate system readiness against established safety requirements. This role involves collaborating with external partners to collect and analyze real-world truck driving data, informing product and societal safety expectations, and supporting robust comparative safety assessments. Furthermore, the engineer will collaborate with engineering teams to identify safety gaps, recommend improvements, and ensure traceability between requirements, validation artifacts, and safety case claims. They will implement tools and methodologies to streamline safety validation processes, continuously evolving the assigned safety framework methods, and ensuring clear, structured documentation of safety artifacts and readiness decisions.
Develops self-driving technology for trucking
Waabi focuses on developing self-driving technology specifically for the trucking industry. Their main product, the Waabi Driver, is designed to learn from experiences, adapt to new situations, and work with various hardware setups. This technology aims for large-scale use and is intended for integration into vehicles by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). A key feature that sets Waabi apart from competitors is its use of Waabi World, an advanced simulation environment that allows for efficient development of their self-driving systems. This reduces the need for extensive real-world testing, which can be costly and time-consuming, while also improving safety and adaptability. Waabi's goal is to transform the trucking industry by providing technology that lowers operational costs and enhances safety for commercial vehicles. They aim to license their technology to trucking companies and OEMs, making it easier for these businesses to adopt self-driving solutions.
