Senior Software Architect

Position Overview

Bonterra is seeking a Senior Software Architect to drive the design and implementation of our cloud-based, agentic software systems. This is a hands-on and strategic role involving coding, designing critical infrastructure, and leading architectural decisions that will shape the future of Bonterra's technology. You will guide the transition of existing systems to AWS, architect new cloud-native solutions, and directly impact system scalability and delivery acceleration. In partnership with the Chief Architect, you will define and drive Bonterra's technical strategy, leading transformative work as the company transitions from traditional SaaS to AI-first, agentic platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of durable, scalable product architectures for Bonterra's solutions for the next 5–10 years.
  • Author and review specifications to ensure alignment across Product and Engineering, and maintain architectural integrity across platforms.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex architectural and design issues, mentoring engineers on design tradeoffs and system choices.
  • Write and review code on Bonterra’s most strategic and experimental initiatives, setting the standard for development practices.
  • Perform technical due diligence on acquisition targets to inform investment and integration decisions.
  • Conduct technical teardowns of existing products to identify architectural risks, opportunities, and inform long-term strategy.
  • Integrate AI tools and LLMs into the software development lifecycle to streamline architecture design, code quality, and productivity.
  • Lead the integration of LLMs and autonomous agents into core product functionality, transforming workflows into intelligent, self-operating experiences.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to translate the AI-first vision into an executable roadmap for product offerings and internal engineering processes.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience building and delivering software products.
  • 5+ years of experience making final architectural decisions on major software projects.
  • Strong command of software design patterns, systems architecture, distributed systems, and cloud-native platforms (especially AWS).
  • Proven ability to deeply understand and contribute to large codebases.
  • A passion for applying emerging technologies to meaningful challenges.
  • Driven by clarity and simplicity in complex systems.
  • Ability to balance big-picture strategic thinking with low-level technical detail.
  • Skilled in making effective tradeoffs between speed and technical perfection, prioritizing business value.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A proactive approach to seeking transformative ideas and shaping craft and team.
  • Demonstrated ability to ship products.
