Position Summary

Illumina is seeking a Senior Medical Writer for its scientific and medical communications group within the Global Medical Affairs team. This role will focus on scientific writing and editing to support Illumina’s clinical genomics research, aligning with business directions and elevating the medical affairs voice. The ideal candidate will work cross-functionally to deliver scientific publications and summaries, including peer-reviewed scientific publications, slides, educational materials, and literature summaries. Candidates must be able to lead peer-reviewed publications in areas such as somatic oncology, hereditary disease, reproductive genetics, rare disease, population screening, infectious disease, DNA sequencing technology, and multi-omics applied in clinical, patient advocacy, and policy settings.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan, write, and edit publications and other collateral.
  • Lead the development of manuscripts for peer-reviewed research across diverse clinical areas.
  • Organize and develop strong manuscripts based on clinical research, pharma companion diagnostics research, and research demonstrating the clinical validity and utility of ‘omics technologies.
  • Provide cross-functional support to teams including marketing, sales, business development, market access, government affairs, and product management.
  • Work closely with Illumina’s clinical data analysis team in medical affairs.
  • Prepare scientific abstracts, posters, and presentations for national and international conferences.
  • Work efficiently and accurately, adhering to best practices and departmental standards for terminology, content management, and reuse.
  • Be adaptable and forward-thinking regarding technological or organizational changes.
  • Propose improvements to authoring tools and collaborate with study leads for evaluation and implementation.
  • Initiate and drive projects to improve efficiency and sensible cost avoidance.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in life sciences with experience in a scientific/medical communications role.
  • Deep understanding of clinical genomics for screening and diagnostics.
  • Previous experience in research publications within medical affairs in a clinical genomics organization is required.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with genomic NGS data.
  • Excellent and proven team skills, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to be a strong partner, intelligently gather input from multiple stakeholders, and effectively deal with ambiguous or missing information.
  • Strong organizational skills, excellent time and project management, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sophisticated understanding of the principles and practices of medical writing, content management, and reuse.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and web authoring tools.
  • Proficiency in English with excellent grammatical and editorial skills, and attentiveness to industry-leading writing standards.
