Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Packaging Engineering, Materials/Polymer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering
  • Proven track record in developing new packaging technologies
  • Experience aligning cross-functional leaders on an innovation strategy
  • Experience leading a dynamic team to execute a large portfolio of projects
  • Based in Tokyo, Japan, with hybrid work schedule (not remote)
  • Ability to travel 26% - 50%

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership on developing a pipeline of packaging design and technologies from ideation to commercialization, using knowledge of packaging materials, production processes, sustainability, and cutting-edge technologies
  • Network with the global packaging R&D community to identify, assess, and bring packaging innovation opportunities to support business growth
  • Lead environmentally friendly packaging innovations and ensure compliance with local regulations and company standards
  • Articulate a future state for packaging to deliver sustainability goals and business objectives, leading the team to explore innovative solutions
  • Work cross-functionally to align stakeholders on strategic plans, develop business cases for new packages using scientific, consumer, and business data, and build technical resources to deliver ambitions
  • Build and motivate a high-performing team of technical packaging leaders and SMEs, fostering growth, development, and responsible decision-making
  • Develop rapport with colleagues and stakeholders (internal/external, including suppliers, universities, research institutes), influence packaging innovation decisions, and negotiate/enforce technical requirements with supply chain, bottlers, and suppliers
  • Cultivate a global perspective within the team, building rapport with the global network to drive scale and fast adoption of new technologies
  • Ensure all packaging initiatives comply with safety and regulatory affairs, and maintain understanding of intellectual property laws and patents to protect innovations
  • Manage the packaging development budget effectively
  • Develop the APAC packaging strategy, align on packaging innovation and sustainability pipeline, support business continuity, build high-performing team, and ensure project execution excellence
  • Lead packaging development teams in Tokyo and Shanghai Technical Centers
