Senior Data Engineer

Position Overview

Headway's mission is to build a new mental health care system that everyone can access. We've developed technology that connects people with great therapists through a software-enabled national network of providers who accept insurance. Currently, 1 in 4 people in the US experience a treatable mental health condition, but the majority of providers do not accept insurance, making therapy inaccessible due to cost. Headway is creating a new mental healthcare system that is accessible to all by simplifying the process for therapists to accept insurance and grow their practices.

Founded in 2019, Headway has grown into a diverse, national network of over 45,000 mental healthcare providers across all 50 states. Our software supports these providers in running their practices, and we have served over 1 million patients. We are a Series D company with over $325 million in funding from prominent investors including a16z (Andreessen Horowitz), Accel, GV (formerly Google Ventures), Spark Capital, Thrive Capital, Forerunner Ventures, and Health Care Service Corporation.

We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering Team and help us advance our mission of creating access to affordable, quality mental healthcare across the United States. Data is fundamental to our mission, powering critical business decisions and the systems that support patients, providers, payers, and internal teams. The Data Engineering team is responsible for building and maintaining the infrastructure that makes this possible. We collaborate closely with stakeholders across the company, including Finance, Insurance Systems, Analytics, Product, and Data Science, to ensure Headway's data platform is scalable, reliable, and secure.

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping the future of our data architecture. You will work cross-functionally to design and implement robust data pipelines, establish and enforce data governance standards, and ensure our platform meets the evolving needs of the business.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and infrastructure to support internal stakeholders and core business functions.
  • Define, develop, and refine data governance, monitoring, and quality standards across the company.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering teams to advocate for best practices in data engineering and ensure data needs are addressed early in the product lifecycle.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Analytics, Data Science, and Infrastructure teams to continuously evolve Headway’s data architecture.
  • Own and drive technical decisions across the data platform, contributing to performance optimization and infrastructure-as-code initiatives.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience as a data engineer, with a proven track record of building scalable systems and solving complex data problems in a fast-paced tech environment.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Experience with modern data platform tools and services, such as Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Fivetran, and Terraform.
  • Familiarity with visualization tools like Metabase or Jupyter Notebooks is a plus.
  • A pragmatic approach to building solutions that address both current needs and future scalability.
  • A strong sense of ownership and a bias toward action, particularly when facing ambiguity.
  • Empathy for teammates and stakeholders, coupled with a collaborative mindset that values interdisciplinary work.
  • Passion for Headway’s mission to make mental healthcare more accessible and affordable.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Expected Base Pay Range: $183,600 - $216,000 (based on qualifications, experience, and geographic location).
  • This role may be eligible for performance-based variable compensation and an equity grant, depending on the position and level.
  • We are committed to offering a comprehensive benefits package.
