Requirements

Candidates should possess 8+ years of engineering experience, including a minimum of 3 years in technical leadership. A proven record of building production-grade data infrastructure and platforms from inception is required, along with experience in at least one Enterprise Data Platform (Snowflake, Databricks) within highly regulated environments. Experience with multi-tenant system architecture, complex access and security requirements, Lambda vs Kappa Architecture patterns, major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and their data services, cloud-native data architectures, optimization, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and IAC tools (Terraform preferred) is necessary. Expertise in role-based access control, audit logging, data governance, data security, encryption, and tokenization is essential. Prior experience with PHI/PII and audited environments, HIPAA, SOC2, HITRUST compliance, and healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7) or equivalent experience in other regulated fields is required. Core competencies include Python, Advanced SQL, Apache Spark (or other big data technologies), and Apache Kafka (or other streaming technologies).

Responsibilities

The Principal Data Engineer will drive vendor evaluation and adoption of critical data platform tools. They will architect and lead the implementation of a production-grade, multi-tenant data lake handling PHI at scale. This role involves leading cross-functional implementation of new data infrastructure, establishing and maintaining SLAs for critical data processing and availability, and creating operational accountability frameworks for the entire data pipeline lifecycle. Responsibilities also include maintaining legacy pipelines and processing while facilitating the replacement of older systems with new tooling, and guiding architectural decisions to balance immediate needs with long-term goals of scalability, compliance, and enhanced capabilities. Additionally, the Principal Data Engineer will provide mentorship to existing team members.
