Senior Data Engineer

Employment Type: Full-time Location Type: Hybrid

Position Overview

Wrisk is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join our team and contribute to reinventing insurance for the digital consumer. This is a hands-on role for an individual who is passionate about building clean, scalable data systems and infrastructure. You will work closely with the existing Senior Data Engineer to design, build, and improve data pipelines, services, and infrastructure on our AWS data stack, powering Wrisk's growth. We are looking for someone who prefers shipping high-quality code, can translate abstract problems into structured plans, and can work independently. You will lead by example, delivering clean, robust code, championing best practices, and elevating technical excellence within the data engineering function.

Responsibilities

  • Build and Own Data Infrastructure: Design, implement, and maintain cloud-native data infrastructure on AWS, including services like ECS, ECR, RDS, Redshift, API Gateway, EC2, and networking components.
  • Develop Data Pipelines: Architect and maintain robust data pipelines and workflow systems using Python and orchestration tools.
  • Develop Services: Build APIs using FastAPI, deploy simple front ends, and leverage modeling techniques and LLMs.
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform): Manage infrastructure as code using Terraform to ensure reproducibility, security, and scalability.
  • Solve Ambiguous Problems: Translate abstract requirements into actionable plans and implement solutions independently.
  • Write Clean, Future-Proof Code: Create modular, well-tested code that adheres to industry standards, prioritizing long-term maintainability.
  • Ensure Data Integrity and Performance: Optimize queries, schema designs, and storage strategies for reliable and efficient data flows.
  • Improve and Automate: Proactively identify bottlenecks, improve operational efficiency, and drive automation across the stack.
  • Collaborate and Lead: Engage in collaborative discussions, champion your ideas, and lead your area of work with autonomy.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Data Engineering and back-end development roles.
  • Comfortable with context switching and balancing delivery pressure with quality.
  • Strong Python development experience with the ability to write well-structured, reusable code.
  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code, ideally Terraform, with experience deploying infrastructure this way.
  • Strong analytical capabilities for working with unstructured datasets, performing root cause analysis, and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Strong knowledge of AWS, particularly with its services.
