    • Austin, TX or Washington DC metros or in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, or Washington states: $180,800 - $234,000
    • All other US locations: $170,800 - $221,000 (Actual offered salaries will vary based on calibrated job level, qualifications, skills, competencies.)

About the Data Engineering Team

The Data Engineering team at Thumbtack is a centralized team that collaborates with engineers, analysts, data scientists, and machine learning engineers. The team focuses on designing and curating data sets from internal and third-party sources to meet current and future needs. The team aims to build a cohesive data warehouse and integrate data best practices into the full software development lifecycle (SDLC).

Challenge

Thumbtack faces the challenge of multiple teams managing Terabytes of data with unique needs for cleaning and organizing it to measure performance. This role involves working with various stakeholders to understand their data requirements and build datasets to address these challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively refine and evangelize a comprehensive framework for integrating data-thinking into the software development lifecycle for product teams.
  • Design, architect, and maintain core marketing datasets, data marts, and feature stores to support both mature and rapidly evolving products, in partnership with analytics, data science, and machine learning teams.
  • Integrate with cross-functional teams (product engineers, analysts, data scientists, machine learning engineers) to understand their data needs and design datasets with robust engineering principles.
  • Drive data quality and best practices across different business areas.
  • Contribute to building the next generation of data products at Thumbtack, including real-time data products on top of Apache Kafka.

Requirements

  • 4 or more years of experience designing and building data sets and warehouses.
  • Excellent ability to understand stakeholder needs and collaborate with functions like Analytics, identifying opportunities for process improvements.
  • Expertise in SQL for analytics, reporting, business intelligence, and building SQL- and Python-based transforms within ETL pipelines.
  • Experience designing, architecting, and maintaining data warehouses and data marts that integrate data from production databases, clickstream data, and external APIs for multiple stakeholders.
  • Expertise in building with a modern data stack, preferably including cloud-native data warehouses like BigQuery, dbt, and Apache Airflow, or similar technologies.
  • Strong sense of ownership and pride in work, from ideation and requirements-gathering to project completion and maintenance.
