Candidates must possess a J.D. from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice in the U.S. A minimum of 8 years of legal experience is required, with substantial exposure to cybersecurity, technology law, or regulatory compliance. A strong understanding of cybersecurity frameworks, incident response protocols, and IT operations is necessary, along with experience advising on global regulatory regimes and managing cross-border legal issues. Excellent analytical, communication, and negotiation skills are essential, as is the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrixed environment. Preferred qualifications include experience with AI legal issues, connected devices, IoT products, complex supply chain security, incident management, relevant certifications (CIPP/US, CISSP), and experience in the automotive, mobility, or regulated industries.
The Senior Counsel – Cybersecurity will provide legal support for GM’s global cybersecurity operations, including information security, product cybersecurity, and manufacturing engineering. This role involves advising cybersecurity and engineering teams on legal issues related to connected vehicle technologies, privacy-by-design, and security-by-design principles. Responsibilities include monitoring and interpreting global cybersecurity laws, standards, and regulatory developments, supporting compliance initiatives and audits, and providing legal counsel on cybersecurity architecture, threat detection, and secure development practices. The role also entails supporting the public policy team by assessing the impact of proposed cybersecurity and privacy regulations, leading legal support for global incident response and vulnerability management, and drafting/reviewing cybersecurity and IT-related policies, standards, and procedures. Additionally, the counsel will partner with IT teams on legal issues in infrastructure, identity and access management, cloud services, and enterprise software, support technology and strategic transactions with a focus on cybersecurity and data protection, and engage with external regulators and industry groups.
