Safety By Design Policy Expert, Developer Platform

Position Overview

• Salary: $192,000 - $216,000 + equity + benefits (US base salary)

Discord is used by over 200 million people every month, with a significant focus on gaming. We are seeking a Safety By Design Policy practitioner to join our Product Policy organization. This role will focus on building safe products in collaboration with Product and Engineering teams, specifically concerning Discord’s public API, SDKs, and developer ecosystem. You will report to the Senior Manager, Safety By Design Policy.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience working on APIs, SDKs, app stores, middleware, open source, or other third-party integrations.
• Experience in relevant issues such as responsible product development, trust & safety product, or advocacy for marginalized communities, preferably within tech, non-profit, or community organizations.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education/experience.
• Passion for understanding and mitigating the unintended impact of online communication services on users and society.
• Experience working directly with product, engineering, design, research partners, or multiple stakeholders simultaneously.
• Collaborative attitude, flexibility, and a willingness to question assumptions.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Product, Engineering, Legal, Design, Developer Compliance, Developer Relations, and other cross-functional teams to identify safety risks and opportunities in product changes, and collaborate on building mitigations into product design and contributing to product strategy.
• Own the Discord Developer Policies, governing the acceptable uses of our public API and SDKs by third-party developers, in close collaboration with the Developer Compliance and Legal teams.
• Build and maintain knowledge of Discord’s public API, SDKs, products, internal tools, infrastructure, and the developer ecosystem.
• Work closely with the Safety cross-functional group (Safety XFN) to evaluate policy and enforcement impacts on new product changes and scope necessary requirements.
• Support the development of responsible product development content, including training, guides, talking points, strategies, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
• Write user-facing communications, such as blog posts and Help Center Articles, to explain products and safety features.

Bonus Points

• Programming experience (helpful for demonstrating API proficiency).
• Familiarity with Discord.
• Experience in international social issues or policy development.
• Multilingual.
