Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and intervention skills for patient response and machine safety checks
  • Ability to collect and prepare laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, administer heparin
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF, etc.)
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, monitor patient response
  • Perform hemostasis, apply dressings, evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming, ensure safety alarms enabled
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and complete documentation accurately
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, document interventions for patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, provide interventions, document/report findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills
  • Prepare/organize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Support Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements for patient satisfaction and goals
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
