Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access, vascular access evaluation, cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law), hemodialysis machine setup/operation/programming (e.g., QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms like Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to perform vital signs measurement (pre/post treatment, intradialytic, standing/sitting BP), weight assessment, hemostasis, dressings, machine safety checks, blood spill cleanup, laboratory specimen preparation
  • Accurate and timely documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate access, administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including blood/dialysate flow, intradialytic interventions, reinfusion, venous access termination
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling); ensure safety alarms enabled
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet; complete documentation including progress notes
  • Report significant patient changes, unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Observe patients, perform/document machine safety checks and interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), provide interventions, document/report issues
  • Obtain/pack lab specimens; clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently to avoid wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on programs
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment; support QEP/CQI activities
