Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits - NVL 160)
  • Ability to perform vital signs monitoring, pre/post treatment evaluations, and hemostasis
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Capability to conduct machine safety checks and intervene in intradialytic problems per physician orders
  • Skills in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and staff recruitment

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, including programming UF goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Perform and document pre/post dialysis evaluations, vital signs, hemostasis, and dressings
  • Record accurate treatment information on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, monitor vascular access pressures, and document interventions
  • Obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor and assist patients in self-care under RN supervision
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Support QEP, CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
  • Participate in staff recruitment
