Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Ability to obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and perform evaluations
Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
Proficiency in calculating and entering dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ability to enable safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Observation and machine safety checks per facility policy
Ability to perform and document interventions for patient status changes
Skills in laboratory testing specimen preparation and blood spill cleanup
Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
Monitoring patients performing self-care under RN supervision

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
Evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
Obtain pre/post vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
Monitor patient response to therapy, obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, and discontinue treatment
Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre/post evaluations
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled
Record vital signs and parameters on treatment sheet with initials
Document treatment information completely and report changes to RN/supervisor
Conduct patient observation and machine safety checks; report unusual findings
Monitor vascular access during treatment, intervene, document, and report
Obtain prescribed lab tests and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills per policy
Prepare/organize supplies and equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision and assist as applicable
Maintain safe/clean working environment
Support QEP, CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
