Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access, vascular access cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines, calculate and enter patient-specific programming (e.g., Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ability to perform vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluation, machine safety checks, and documentation
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Training in facility policies for cleaning blood spills, hemostasis, dressings, and supply management

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate access, administer heparin as allowed
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
Monitor patients’ response to therapy, evaluate intradialytic problems, provide interventions as prescribed
Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations
Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling; ensure safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160) are enabled
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and information on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes with initial identification
Report significant information/changes in patient condition to RN or supervisor
Observe patient, conduct machine safety checks, document interventions for unusual status
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures), intervene as needed, document/report unusual findings
Obtain prescribed laboratory testing, prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff
