Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Ability to obtain and record pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Capability to monitor patients during treatment, evaluate intradialytic problems, and provide interventions as prescribed
Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Ability to perform machine safety checks, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre/post vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and ensure hemostasis/dressings
Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming, enable safety alarms, and record treatment parameters
Document all treatment information accurately and timely, including vital signs and evaluations
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and report issues
Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens
Clean blood spills and maintain safe/clean environment
Prepare/organize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
