Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in monitoring patient response, vital signs, and intradialytic problems
Proficiency in dialysis machine programming (e.g., Ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms like Narrow Venous Limits)
Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Observation and machine safety checks per facility policy
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed
Perform pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, calculate UF goals, program machines, ensure safety alarms
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and documentation with initial identification
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, document responses
Obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Maintain safe and clean working environment
Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff
