Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Ability to obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform evaluations
Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
Knowledge of intradialytic interventions, machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling), and safety alarms (e.g., NVL 160)
Accurate documentation skills (Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes to RN/supervisor
Skills in laboratory specimen preparation and blood spill cleanup
Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
Support for QEP, CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
Evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, and intervene as prescribed
Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post evaluations
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled
Document vital signs, treatment parameters, and interventions accurately and timely
Report significant patient changes to RN/supervisor
Perform machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual findings
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and intervene/report as needed
Obtain prescribed lab tests and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills immediately
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Maintain safe and clean working environment
Participate in QEP/CQI activities for quality enhancement and patient goals
