Requirements

  • Experience in creating hair, fur, and feather grooms for characters, creatures, and props using off-the-shelf and proprietary tools
  • Experience leading and mentoring teams in a production pipeline
  • Ability to supervise, provide direction, and ensure quality control for groom creation and rendering according to project designs and visual style
  • Experience in all aspects of groom work in a VFX production environment
  • Ability to assess technical feasibility of designs and implement production-friendly workflows
  • Skills in bidding work, driving schedules, and balancing artistic and productivity requirements
  • Experience guiding artists' professional development, providing performance feedback, team building, and maintaining morale
  • Involvement in recruiting and staffing, assessing candidates, and collaborating on hiring decisions
  • Ability to train, mentor new artists, and provide technical assistance to supervisors
  • Capacity to maintain high productivity, meet deadlines, and produce high-quality work
  • Experience balancing time across multiple shows to drive quality standards
  • Proactive approach to developing department technology, workflows, talent, and bringing new ideas/solutions

Responsibilities

  • Create outstanding fur, feather, and hair grooms for characters, creatures, and props
  • Supervise and direct a team of groom artists, ensuring grooms meet project style and quality
  • Consult with VFX Supervisor, CG Supervisor, Model Supervisor, Look Development Supervisor, Texture Supervisor, and Lighting Supervisor on technical feasibility and workflows
  • Bid work, drive the groom schedule, and balance artistic/productivity needs with production management and other supervisors
  • Attend show production and team meetings to ensure effective communication
  • Guide artists' professional development, provide performance feedback, facilitate team building, and maintain positive morale
  • Participate in recruiting and staffing the Groom team, assessing candidates, and collaborating on hiring
  • Ensure artists meet show requirements and oversee their work
  • Collaborate with Modeling, Look Development, Texture, Simulation, Rigging, and Production departments for technical, aesthetic, and schedule needs
  • Train and mentor new artists, provide technical assistance to show supervisors
  • Maintain consistent productivity, meet deadlines, and produce high-quality work
  • Work on the department across multiple shows to elevate groom quality
  • Drive department development with local and global Groom teams, advancing technology, workflows, and talent, and proactively introduce new ideas/solutions
