Candidates must have experience managing engineers and engineering teams responsible for infrastructure, platform, or developer-facing tools. A strong technical background in systems engineering, cloud infrastructure (Kubernetes, OpenStack, etc.), and developer platform architecture is required. Proven ability to lead cross-functional collaboration and product-oriented development in open communities or large-scale developer ecosystems, along with excellent communication and facilitation skills, especially in distributed and asynchronous environments, is essential. The ability to travel 2-3 times a year is also a requirement. Experience managing engineering teams focused on security, contributions to or leadership in open-source projects, and familiarity with Wikipedia or Wikimedia projects are highly desirable.
The Engineering Manager, Security and Privacy will lead a group of security and privacy engineers in protecting the Wikimedia Foundation’s people, project integrity, infrastructure, and other assets against threats. This role involves advising product management across the Foundation on security best practices and the security implications of product decisions. Key responsibilities include helping establish the Foundation’s overall security and safety roadmap, ensuring delivery against technical and organizational goals, and collaborating with Product & Engineering teams, Legal, ITS, and other departments. The manager will set direction, unblock work, establish and lead group processes like sprint planning, security releases, and incident response, and hire and develop a high-performing, inclusive engineering group.
