Requirements

Candidates must have experience managing engineers and engineering teams responsible for infrastructure, platform, or developer-facing tools. A strong technical background in systems engineering, cloud infrastructure (Kubernetes, OpenStack, etc.), and developer platform architecture is required. Proven ability to lead cross-functional collaboration and product-oriented development in open communities or large-scale developer ecosystems is essential, along with excellent communication and facilitation skills, especially in distributed and asynchronous environments. Candidates must be based in time zones from UTC−5 to UTC+2 and be willing to travel 2-3 times a year. Experience managing security-focused engineering teams, contributing to open-source projects, and familiarity with Wikimedia projects are desirable.

Responsibilities

The Engineering Manager will lead a group of security and privacy engineers to protect the Wikimedia Foundation’s people, project integrity, infrastructure, and other assets against threats. They will advise product management on security best practices and the security implications of product decisions. This role involves helping to establish the Foundation’s overall security and safety roadmap and ensuring its delivery, collaborating with various departments, setting direction, unblocking work, and establishing and leading group processes such as sprint planning, security releases, and incident response. Additionally, the manager will be responsible for hiring and developing a high-performing, inclusive engineering group.
