Candidates must have experience managing engineers and engineering teams responsible for infrastructure, platform, or developer-facing tools. A strong technical background in systems engineering, cloud infrastructure (Kubernetes, OpenStack, etc.), and developer platform architecture is required. Proven ability to lead cross-functional collaboration and product-oriented development in open communities or large-scale developer ecosystems is essential. Excellent communication and facilitation skills, especially in distributed and asynchronous environments, are necessary. The ability to travel 2-3 times a year is also required. Experience managing engineering teams with a focus on security, contributing to or leading in open-source projects, and familiarity with Wikipedia or Wikimedia projects are highly desirable. Candidates must be based in time zones from UTC−5 to UTC+2.
The Engineering Manager will lead a group of security and privacy engineers in protecting the Wikimedia Foundation’s people, project integrity, infrastructure, and other assets against threats. They will advise product management on security best practices and the security implications of product decisions. This role involves helping to establish the Foundation’s overall security and safety roadmap and ensuring delivery against technical and organizational goals. Responsibilities include collaborating with Product & Engineering teams, Legal, ITS, and other departments, setting direction, unblocking work, and ensuring delivery. The manager will establish and lead group processes, including sprint planning, security releases and deployments, and security incident response. Additionally, they will hire and develop a high-performing, inclusive engineering group that builds and owns security-critical software and operates from a shared sense of mission.
