Firefox Desktop Engineering Manager

Why Mozilla?

Mozilla Corporation is a non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser. With over 225 million monthly users worldwide, we are shaping the next 25 years of technology and helping to reclaim an internet built for people, not companies. Our work spans diverse areas including AI, social media, and security, all while staying true to our core mission: making the internet better for people.

The Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This unique structure means we are not beholden to shareholders, but solely to our mission. Alongside thousands of volunteer contributors globally, Mozillians design, build, and distribute open-source software that empowers people to experience the internet on their own terms.

About this team and role:

The Firefox team is a community of engineers dedicated to delivering the fastest, friendliest, and most usable browser possible. We ensure the components you see in the browser function securely, quickly, and effectively. Working in the open is our standard practice, and we contribute to the code that drives the Firefox browser across multiple desktop platforms: Windows, Linux, and macOS. Our focus is on implementing and fixing features within Firefox, as well as assisting other teams in enhancing the user experience.

The Firefox Desktop Engineering Manager will lead a geographically distributed team of engineers, driving continuous improvements to Firefox through innovations and enhancements to the browser's user interface. We are seeking a leader committed to building exceptional teams, creating innovative solutions, delivering top-notch software, and influencing how the world interacts with the internet.

Feel good about your work again! Pursue your future while working to protect the future of the internet for everyone, everywhere.

What you’ll do:

  • Drive initiatives to deliver value to our users, ensuring the software your team delivers is high quality, highly available, monitored, and maintainable.
  • Communicate your team’s goals, project scope, and risks, and own the delivery of initiatives on clear timelines.
  • Identify, build, and iterate on engineering processes that support a high-performing team.
  • Engage regularly in 1-on-1 meetings with your team to discuss technical work and professional development, providing direct and honest feedback on individual performance.
  • Ensure developers are properly supported and empowered throughout the developer lifecycle.
  • Create an inclusive environment that engages and challenges your team members.
  • Collaborate effectively with various teams, including Product, UX, QA, Operations, and Data Analysis.

What you’ll bring:

  • 3+ years of experience leading engineers in a software development environment, working across multiple distributed teams.
  • A software engineering background that enables you to drive technical decisions within the team and engage with engineers of all seniority levels to triage, prioritize, and implement solutions.
  • A proven track record of successfully leading and shipping sophisticated software projects on time in a loosely structured environment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with others, regardless of their rank or role.
  • A passion for problem-solving, risk management, leading change, and facilitating collaborative decision-making.
  • Experience effectively communicating with senior leadership and advocating for engineering priorities.
  • A desire to grow and learn as a manager, develop others, and achieve results through your team rather than personal technical proficiency.
  • The ability to hire, mentor, empower, develop, and delegate to geographically distributed team members with diverse skills.
  • A commitment to our values.
