Engineering Manager

Why Mozilla?

Mozilla Corporation is a technology company backed by a non-profit organization, dedicated to improving the internet for the past 25 years. We are known for pioneering brands like Firefox, a privacy-focused web browser. With over 225 million monthly active users globally, we are shaping the future of technology and advocating for an internet that prioritizes people over corporations. Our work spans diverse fields including AI, social media, and security, all while remaining committed to our core mission of enhancing the internet for everyone.

Mozilla Corporation is fully owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This unique structure means we are not driven by shareholder demands but by our mission. Alongside thousands of global volunteers and collaborators, Mozillians design, build, and distribute open-source software, empowering individuals to experience the internet on their own terms.

About this Team and Role

Are you passionate about web technologies and their ability to enhance users' lives? Do you thrive on helping engineers excel and advance in their careers?

We are seeking two Engineering Managers:

  • Engineering Manager for the DOM team: This role is responsible for the Gecko implementation of web standards such as Storage, File System, Web Workers, Push API, and Notifications API, which power the websites used by Firefox users.
  • Engineering Manager for the SpiderMonkey JavaScript team: This role oversees Mozilla's JavaScript engine and JavaScript standards (TC39), which are fundamental to the web experiences of Firefox users.

Both teams are geographically distributed, with some members located in the Mozilla Berlin office. Working virtually and openly is our standard practice.

What You'll Do

  • Manage a team of software engineers working on storage, background, and system-level Web APIs and standards, or the SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine and related standards.
  • Mentor and guide a diverse team of engineers, fostering collaboration, supporting career growth, and demonstrating empathy for their needs.
  • Own the team's roadmap, collaborating closely with platform peer managers, product management, and technical leads to manage risks, balance resources, and remove blockers.
  • Assign tasks based on individual strengths, while working collaboratively with the team to deliver major initiatives on clear timelines.
  • Ensure the team delivers well-planned, high-quality, and maintainable software.
  • Engage openly with the open-source community.

What You'll Bring

  • A minimum of 2 years of hands-on people management experience.
  • Proven experience as a functional manager, leading diverse engineering teams and mentoring individuals with skill sets different from your own.
  • Strong project management skills to guide the team in delivering and maintaining complex software projects.
  • A solid software engineering background to inform technical decisions, engage effectively with engineers at all levels, and empower tech leads as primary designers and decision-makers.
  • Proficiency in software development lifecycle practices, including triage, prioritization, and execution.
  • A passion for problem-solving, risk management, leading change, and facilitating collaborative decision-making.
  • Commitment to Mozilla's values:
    • Welcoming differences
    • Being relationship-minded
    • Practicing responsible participation
    • Having grit

What You'll Get

  • Generous performance-based bonus plans for all eligible employees, reflecting our shared success.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting.
  • Quarterly all-company wellness days for collective rest and rejuvenation.
  • Country-specific holidays plus a day off for your birthday.
  • A one-time home office stipend.
  • Annual professional development budget.
