Requirements

Expertise in assisting clients with federal Social Security benefits based on mental and/or physical disabilities, including case development, representation at administrative hearings, appeals, and post-award issues
Ability to work with a wide range of disabilities, including home-bound clients, clients with mental illness, and clients with complex treatment schedules
Commitment to learning about, understanding, identifying, and overcoming barriers to justice, from individual preconceptions to structural obstacles
Alignment with a community-centered, social justice organization focused on fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace

Responsibilities

Work with staff to develop and implement a strategic vision for the Disability Advocacy Project (DAP)
Devise creative, high-impact advocacy strategies to address systemic barriers facing people with disabilities
Supervise DAP’s attorneys and paralegals on litigation, including administrative proceedings, appeals, and affirmative litigation in State and Federal Court
Strengthen relationships with community partners and elected officials to address systemic disability issues
Handle administrative and grant responsibilities
Provide leadership and work collaboratively with Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) broadly
Support existing advocacy efforts and broaden DAP’s work to address systemic barriers
