Claims Specialist - Property and Casualty

Position Overview

Nationwide's Property and Casualty team is seeking passionate individuals to help people protect what matters most and innovate processes to provide exceptional customer value. This role focuses on managing complex Commercial General Liability claims within the General Construction segment, involving both Bodily Injury (BI) and Property components. Many of these claims are litigated and may have exposures up to $1 million.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned claims, including complex and catastrophic casualty losses, with minimal oversight.
  • Make decisions within delegated authority and recommend settlement values in accordance with company policies.
  • Adhere to high standards of professional conduct and deliver superior service.
  • Utilize various settlement methods and assign cases to outside vendors as needed.
  • Open, close, and adjust reserves in alignment with company practices for adequacy, recommending special reserves where necessary.
  • Adhere to file conferencing, notification, and authority procedures.
  • Maintain current knowledge of assigned insurance lines, relevant court decisions, claims function guidelines, and policy changes.
  • Mentor less experienced claims associates and assist with training and presentations.
  • Partner with the Special Investigative Unit (SIU) and Subrogation to identify fraud and subrogation opportunities.
  • Prepare files for lawsuit, trial, or subrogation.
  • Oversee defense counsel in all lawsuit activities throughout the claim's lifecycle.
  • Deliver a positive customer service experience to all Nationwide customers.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Strong Commercial General Liability claims experience, specifically with litigated claims.
  • Experience handling both Bodily Injury (BI) and Property claims.
  • Litigation experience is preferred.
  • Construction experience is a plus.
  • Undergraduate studies in business administration or a related field are preferred, or relevant experience.
  • Relevant licenses, certifications, or designations are required.

This role is for skilled investigators, negotiators, and communicators who are passionate about resolving insurance claims by providing prompt, courteous, and fair service. The Claims Specialist will work to resolve commercial bodily injury and/or property damage claims of a serious and sometimes complex nature, promoting exemplary customer service. Responsibilities include adjusting serious exposure commercial casualty claims, conducting investigations, evaluating property damage, negotiating settlements, handling lawsuit files to conclusion, and overseeing defense counsel activities.
