Requirements

  • High school degree (or equivalent) required, with courses in carpentry, shop, mechanical drawing, and general mathematics required
  • A minimum of 5 years of commercial construction or carpentry experience and commercial hardware experience desired
  • Locksmith certification from a recognized institution or trade school
  • Superior manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination
  • Strong working knowledge of mathematics including ability to work with advanced algebra, geometry and three-dimensional figures
  • Knowledge of and skill in using a variety of carpentry tools and stationary power equipment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds on a regular basis and up to 80 pounds or more occasionally
  • Strong customer focus, initiative, accuracy and problem-solving skills; effective organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and to adapt to changing priorities and meet required timeframes
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of work assignments in a timely manner
  • Knowledge of work-related OSHA regulations including SDS and trained in the proper handling and use of hazardous or corrosive chemicals used in glues and sealers
  • OSHA 10 General Industry Certification

Responsibilities

  • Performs all types of carpentry and locksmithing services including building modifications and building maintenance for the Downtown and Franklin Campuses and all other NM related facilities and grounds
  • Assists with evaluating and selecting cost effective measures to complete tasks in the most timely and efficient manner possible, developing specifications and time schedules, and addressing safety issues
  • Assists in consultative role in the construction of new offices and other areas
  • Ensures overall quality of all work performed by Carpentry Unit; works with other team members, contractors, and trainees as assigned
  • Performs various jobs based on work orders, including designing, building and contracting various scale projects, layouts, and making modifications and repairs to cabinets, displays, and furniture
  • Installs, repairs and/or remodels doors, hardware, windows, walls, carpeting, flooring and ceilings, using a wide variety of materials and tools
  • In response to ergonomic requests, works with Human Resources and Facility Planners to design, modify or build custom items to meet individual requirements
  • Performs general repairs and building envelope restoration
  • Keeps informed of new carpentry methods, materials, and tools
  • Assists with the installation and maintenance of all locks on campus
  • Installs electric strikes and locks, programmable electronic locks and recording devices
  • Cuts building keys under the direction of Team Lead or Manager
  • Designs and implements small master key systems
  • Assists with maintaining key security systems for Northwestern Mutual complexes and re-pins lock cylinders to master and change keys
  • Helps to ensure proper inventory management on stock items such as vinyl, wood, doors, hardware, glass and fasteners; assists in proper and timely ordering of routine equipment, tools and materials
  • Unloads, confirms, transports and/or stocks materials between loading docks, shops storage areas
  • Assists with duties of Lead Carpenter during time of absence including scheduling and oversight of other team members and contractors, directing them and monitoring them as needed
  • Assists with design layouts, builds, installs, and/or removes work for periodic, special events
