Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience required. Master's degree preferred
  • Fifteen (15) years fresh food/grocery experience
  • Ten (10) years in a Leadership capacity
  • Demonstrated business and financial acumen
  • Ability to lead a team, assess performance, and drive continuous improvement
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and with all levels in the organization
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, with attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects/deliverables
  • Ability to travel for store visits and/or industry events

Responsibilities

  • Play a key role in developing the long-term vision of Fresh product categories, including produce, deli & bakery, meat, and seafood to ensure success for SpartanNash company-owned stores and independent customers
  • Responsible for Fresh P&L Management, vendor negotiations, and the development and commercialization of merchandising programs to achieve or exceed sales and profit plans
  • Introduce new products and programs and expand successful ones to maximize sales and profits, collaborating with marketing, consumer insights, retail, and other departments to leverage shopper trends to make strong, data-based decisions
  • Lead teams of Fresh Directors & Sr. Directors and their respective category management & procurement teams to execute strategic initiatives, ensuring coordination and consistency across Fresh categories
  • Lead the procurement team in buying, sourcing, and inventory management
  • Manage merchandising budgets, including sales analyses, gross margin, and inventory turnover, accountable for execution against annual operating plan
  • Responsible for department leadership including staffing, training, coaching, and development of leaders and associates
  • Maintain current knowledge of legal regulations, industry trends and best practices within assigned areas; make recommendations to improve current programs and processes and to ensure legal compliance
  • Represent SpartanNash at conferences, trade shows, and other regional or national events
  • Develop quantifiable strategies for private brand growth and profitability and work with private label to increase sales
  • Maintain effective working relationships both internally and externally (i.e., cross-functional business partners, vendors, customers) and develop collaborative efforts for increased market share, customer loyalty and profitability
