Calendly's Platform Services team is seeking a Staff Engineer to play a crucial role in designing, developing, and maintaining foundational services and capabilities that support engineering teams and drive product success. This role involves influencing platform architecture, guiding engineering practices, and ensuring the resiliency, scalability, and performance of the platform. The ideal candidate will have strong technical competency, distributed systems experience, a results-driven mindset for complex problem-solving, and a strong sense of ownership and operational excellence. This position reports to the Head of Platform Services.

Responsibilities

  • Architectural Design: Shape technical strategy and North Star Architecture, guiding the design and implementation of services and components.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide mentorship, guidance, and decision-making to enable engineering teams to deliver effective solutions.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product, design, engineering, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions, engaging across initiatives like Trust & Safety, Identity & Access Management, Scheduling, and Calendar squads.
  • Planning & Execution: Act as a hands-on contributor on critical initiatives, delivering high output with high quality. Participate in planning to define scope, milestones, and work breakdown for incremental delivery and high impact.
  • Vision & Strategy: Develop and articulate the vision for services and their capabilities, defining strategic value and overseeing evolution to meet future demands.

Requirements

  • Deep understanding of distributed systems and cloud computing.
  • Experience performing a major architectural refactor (experience refactoring a monolithic application into microservices is a bonus).
  • Experience building, operating, and maintaining high-traffic, high-availability platforms and systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex systems, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and propose new solutions or improvements aligned with organizational goals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of conveying complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team, including remote and distributed teams.
  • Proven leadership capabilities with experience mentoring and guiding engineering teams.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies, changing requirements, and evolving organizational needs.
  • Availability for participation in on-call rotation for business-critical alerts outside of regular working hours.
  • Authorized to work lawfully in the United States of America (Calendly does not engage in immigration sponsorship at this time).
