Requirements

Extensive experience building search systems, including hands-on exposure to designing and implementing search infrastructure using technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, or vector databases
Understanding of information retrieval fundamentals, query optimization, and relevance tuning
Experience with AI augmentation of search is highly valuable
Excellent communicator, able to convey complex search architectures to product teams and articulate query performance vs. relevance tradeoffs
Ability to be a strong storyteller to get buy-in from other teams
Experience managing complex search infrastructure, including designing and delivering complex search features, optimizing indexing pipelines, and providing reasonable performance estimates
Experience working on search projects with stakeholders across multiple teams and functional roles
Experience teaching others, including mentoring junior team members

Responsibilities

Collaborate with and support engineering teams by building trust through an empathetic, supportive approach, listening to challenges, and teaching others how to solve them
Define and communicate Dovetail's search technology strategy, working with Technical Leadership to align with product vision and advocate for it to guide technical leads
Identify, prioritize, and solve systemic technical challenges in search architecture, proactively raising issues and leading projects with product leadership
Design and implement advanced search systems, including scalable indexing pipelines, query understanding systems, and relevance tuning mechanisms
Advocate for and maintain engineering quality by setting standards for search accuracy, latency, and relevance, supporting team members, and finding scalable ways to prevent issues
