Software Engineer - Loan Originations & Reporting (LOR)

Position Overview

Affirm is revolutionizing credit by offering honest and friendly payment solutions, enabling consumers to "buy now, pay later" without hidden fees or compounding interest. The Loan Originations & Reporting (LOR) team is at the forefront of this mission, powering the global systems responsible for originating, allocating, and reporting on every loan. Our team is distinguished by its blend of technical expertise and operational breadth, managing critical processes such as loan booking, capital funding, and downstream reporting, all while prioritizing high reliability and financial accuracy. We foster a culture of openness and collaboration, where engineers actively drive architectural discussions, support their colleagues, and continuously improve through direct feedback and retrospectives. We value accountability, curiosity, and a commitment to learning, offering robust mentorship and opportunities to lead large-scale systems.

What You'll Do

  • Collaborate with your team's tech lead and manager to break down complex projects into manageable tasks, deliver them in phases, and ensure timely completion through teamwork.
  • Support peers and stakeholders throughout the product development lifecycle by partnering with product management, design, and analytics. This includes participating in ideation, articulating technical constraints, and making informed decisions that consider risks and trade-offs.
  • Contribute to the operational health and availability of team systems by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating issues as needed, and supporting "keep the lights on" activities and on-call rotations.
  • Foster a strong team community by actively participating in growth and development initiatives, including the interview process.

What We Look For

  • A minimum of 1.5 years of experience as a software engineer.
  • Proven experience in designing, developing, and launching backend systems.
  • Proficiency in either Python or Kotlin.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems concepts and technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate simple problems or business scenarios into robust solutions that integrate with multiple software components, writing clear, understandable, well-tested, and extensible code.
  • Comfort navigating large codebases, debugging code written by others, and providing constructive feedback through code reviews.
  • A track record of taking ownership of personal growth, proactively seeking feedback from team members, managers, and stakeholders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to facilitate effective collaboration with our global engineering team.
  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
