Product Designer - Benefits Team

Position Overview

Propel is on a mission to simplify access to government benefits for low-income Americans. Our app, used by over 5 million families monthly, empowers users to navigate financial challenges and save money. We are seeking a high-craft Product Designer to join our benefits team, reporting to the VP of Design. This role will be instrumental in leading end-to-end feature development, improvements, and maintenance for our core EBT balance checking experience, which serves millions of Americans each month. You will collaborate with product, engineering, and other cross-functional partners to shape strategy, set goals, design experiments, and define long-term vision.

Responsibilities

  • Own and lead design for our core EBT balance checking experience, encompassing high-level strategy to hands-on execution, delivering elegant, practical, and accessible solutions.
  • Translate product goals, user needs, and business insights into clear, thoughtful design decisions throughout the entire product development lifecycle.
  • Assist in running user research and synthesizing insights to identify opportunities, validate solutions, and ensure our work is grounded in real user needs.
  • Partner closely with cross-functional teams (Product, Engineering, Research, and Marketing) to shape roadmaps, scope features, and iterate rapidly.
  • Contribute to and evolve our design system (Citrus), advocating for craft and consistency across the product, alongside other internal design projects.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing and shipping high-quality, mobile-centric products in complex domains.
  • Proven ability to lead projects independently from discovery through delivery, particularly in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
  • A deep appreciation for craft and detail, with an obsession for visuals, interactions, and polish that make products feel exceptional.
  • Ability to independently explore and develop solutions from concept to execution with minimal direction or structured processes.
  • Skilled in using both data and user research, driven by curiosity and empathy, to inform impactful, user-centered design decisions.
  • Strong product instincts with the ability to balance user needs, product goals, and business outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to tell inspiring stories, drive alignment across teams, and clearly articulate design decisions.
  • Strong track record of building trusted partnerships across product, engineering, research, and content teams.
  • Comfortable prototyping ideas using tools like Figma, Replit, Cursor, or similar.
  • A big plus: Background in financial products, government benefits, healthcare, or other regulated industries.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $130,000 - $170,000 (based on internal leveling guide)
  • Meaningful work and a strong, shared sense of mission with a passionate and world-class team.
  • Remote-friendly work environment with a dog-friendly office in Downtown Brooklyn.
  • 20 days of PTO and unlimited sick days.
  • 4% 401K match.
  • $10k lifetime spend towards Carrot Fertility.
  • Excellent Medical, Dental, and Vision options.
  • Other health and mental health focused benefits and perks.
