Requirements

  • Ability to design, develop, and execute strategies for complex categories (beef, pork, sausage) to achieve profit and loss deliverables
  • Proficiency in short-term and long-term planning, forecasts, sales, markdowns, coop collection, market share growth, gross profit, inventory targets/budgets, and pricing management
  • Experience with item level assortment analysis, assortment decisions, needs analysis, vendor optimization, SKU optimization, price ladders, private label/brand strategy, and development
  • Capability to visit stores to build category strategy and price ladders
  • Skills in initiating, negotiating, and managing vendor agreements, costs, allowances/terms, quality, delivery terms, and supplier performance (domestic and overseas vendors)
  • Expertise in category marketing, including tab space planning, item level planning, selection, placement forecasting, execution, accuracy proofing, and exit strategies for inventory residue
  • Proficiency in new item and promotional forecasts, item deletes, markdowns/markups/price adjustments, and exit strategies
  • Experience preparing and leading line reviews, delivering store-ready modulars and seasonal sets on time, promotional planning, modular walkthroughs, and store communication
  • Leadership skills in associate engagement, development, coaching, direction to Category Team Analysts/Associate Merchants/Category Advisors, mentoring, and ensuring development/succession plans

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for all aspects of merchandise profit and loss management and category financial results, including proactive/reactive management to meet or exceed targets
  • Communicate and report results to cross-functional partners, review post-buy financial analysis, and identify records for review
  • Develop category strategies aligned with merchant framework and portfolio strategies using multiple data sources
  • Conduct item level assortment analysis, make assortment decisions, and perform needs analysis for priority sub-categories
  • Optimize vendors and SKUs, develop price ladders, private label/brand strategies
  • Visit stores to build category strategy and price ladders for priority sub-categories; proactively communicate strategies to leadership and cross-functional teams
  • Initiate, negotiate, manage vendor agreements, costs, allowances/terms, quality, delivery; develop and maintain vendor relationships
  • Manage all aspects of category marketing: tab space planning based on historical analysis, item level planning, selection, placement forecasting, execution, accuracy proofing, exit strategies
  • Handle new item and promotional forecasts, identify item deletes, manage and communicate markdowns/markups/price adjustments, develop exit strategies
  • Prepare and lead line reviews, deliver store-ready modulars and seasonal sets on time, complete promotional planning, conduct modular walkthroughs with senior management, create store communication for execution
  • Engage, develop associates, ensure development and succession plans, provide coaching/direction to team members, mentor other merchants
