Senior Manager, Firefox Machine Learning

Why Mozilla?

Mozilla Corporation is a technology company, backed by a non-profit, that has been instrumental in shaping the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We are the creators of pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-focused web browser. With over 225 million monthly users globally, we are actively shaping the next 25 years of technology, working towards an internet built for people, not corporations. Our work spans diverse areas including AI, social media, and security, all while remaining committed to our core mission of improving the internet for everyone.

Mozilla Corporation is fully owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This unique structure means we are not accountable to shareholders, but solely to our mission. In collaboration with thousands of volunteer contributors worldwide, Mozillians develop, build, and distribute open-source software that empowers individuals to experience the internet on their own terms.

About this team and role:

The Firefox Machine Learning team is dedicated to developing and scaling AI-powered features within Mozilla's flagship product. Our goal is to make the browser smarter, more helpful, and more human-centered. As the Senior Manager for this team, you will lead the engineering and ML efforts to develop, train, and deploy Generative AI models and features directly into Firefox. This role will significantly influence how millions of users interact with the web daily.

You will be responsible for guiding a team of highly skilled ML engineers who operate at the intersection of user experience, privacy, and innovative research, driving Mozilla's vision to make powerful AI accessible to all.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead and mentor a team of ML engineers focused on developing Generative AI models and integrating them into Firefox experiences.
  • Oversee the end-to-end machine learning product development lifecycle, from initial research and prototyping through model training, evaluation, deployment, and ongoing iteration in production.
  • Collaborate closely with product, research, design, and platform teams to deliver user-facing features powered by both proprietary and open-source AI models.
  • Define the technical strategy and execution plans for ML initiatives, ensuring alignment with Mozilla's mission and the Firefox product roadmap.
  • Champion engineering excellence, foster an inclusive environment, and maintain a user-first perspective throughout all stages of feature development.

What you’ll bring:

  • 10+ years of experience in machine learning, with at least 5 years in technical management roles.
  • 5+ years of experience in building and deploying ML or Generative AI systems in production environments, including experience with LLMs, transformers, or multimodal models.
  • A proven track record of managing high-performing engineering teams in delivering AI features to a large user base (millions of users).
  • Deep expertise in modern ML development frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow), scalable training and inference infrastructure, and MLOps practices.
  • Experience with on-device machine learning model development and deployment is a significant advantage.
  • Familiarity with privacy-preserving ML techniques such as differential privacy or federated learning is a plus.
  • A Master's degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field (or equivalent industry experience).
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable plans for cross-functional collaboration.

Commitment to our values:

  • Welcoming differences: Foster an inclusive and equitable team environment.
  • Being relationship-minded: Build trusting partnerships across Mozilla and the broader community.
  • Practicing responsible participation: Promote ethical and privacy-aware use of AI.
  • Having grit: Lead through ambiguity and pursue impactful goals with persistence and creativity.

What you’ll get:

  • Generous performance-based bonus plans for all eligible employees, reflecting our shared success.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting, irrespective of your personal contributions.
  • Quarterly all-hands meetings and company updates.
