Requirements

  • Ability to teach ELA courses for 9th, 10th, or 11th grade (Theory of Intelligence, Critical Media Analysis, or Supplemental Essay Writing)
  • For 9th/10th grade: Teach Advisory courses (Personal & Social Identities, Identity & Mental Health, or none for 11th)
  • Availability for part-time, seasonal, in-person work in NYC (specific sites: Baruch College or LIU Brooklyn; occasional SEO Office)
  • Availability for grade-specific dates: orientations (Zoom/in-person), Saturday Academy sessions (8-10 total, some remote)
  • Proficiency in navigating instructional technologies (Brightspace LMS, Nearpod, G-Suite, Zoom chat) in a Blended Learning environment

Responsibilities

  • Instruction & Facilitation: Teach 3-4 periods of ELA and/or Advisory; follow provided lesson plans; meet objectives per SEO’s criteria for rigorous instruction and student engagement
  • Navigate Instructional Technologies: Learn and use Brightspace, Nearpod, G-Suite, Zoom chat efficiently
  • Content Preparation: Read, internalize, practice lesson plans/materials; adjust pacing/activities based on student needs
  • Grading and Record-Keeping: Calculate grades per rubrics; provide actionable feedback; complete grading within 1 week; maintain electronic gradebook on Brightspace
  • Classroom Culture: Project energetic, engaging, approachable persona to foster student connection, investment, and positive community relationships
  • Collaboration with SEO Staff and Instructors: Attend all scheduled meetings, professional development trainings, check-ins, and debriefs
