Reporter, Breaking News (Temporary)

Position Overview

• Salary: $22/hour - $36/hour (Range dependent on location, experience, and skills)

The Breaking News Reporter role allows early-career journalists to put their journalism skills and instincts into practice by writing for our breaking news desk. You’ll report and aggregate breaking stories that are worthy of our readers' time. The role operates on a "West coast" schedule (12-8pm ET and 1-9pm ET) and involves collaborating with editors and beat reporters. Ideal candidates should embody a passion for Axios and Smart Brevity, possess an entrepreneurial spirit, and demonstrate strong news judgment and a quick-paced work ethic.

Requirements

• Exceptional news and editorial judgment and instincts
• Ability to write clear, concise, and accurate copy
• Experience aggregating news stories and working in a breaking news environment
• Outstanding work ethic and comfort in a very fast-paced environment
• A reader of a wide variety of news and the ability to advance the daily news cycle forward with story pitches
• Eager to seek feedback and quick to incorporate feedback to grow and strengthen skills
• Strong collaboration skills with journalists across all levels

Responsibilities

• Report and aggregate breaking news stories for Axios.com.
• Work closely with editors to determine appropriate breaking news stories.
• Collaborate with beat reporters on intersecting stories and newsletter content.
• Maintain a reader of a wide variety of news sources to identify timely stories.
• Quickly incorporate feedback to improve writing and reporting skills.
