The New York Times is seeking reporters with local story ideas to investigate them under the guidance of Dean Baquet and a team of veteran investigative editors. This one-year program aims to provide fellows with the opportunity to learn investigative reporting techniques from experienced journalists. Fellows will be based in their communities and make periodic trips to The Times’ offices for training and support. This fellowship is for reporters in local newsrooms or freelancers.

Requirements

  • Experience: 3 to 5 years of professional experience as a reporter covering a beat for a local newspaper or local digital news outlet.
  • Status: Independent journalist or a journalist employed at a newsroom willing to provide a yearlong sabbatical.

Responsibilities

  • Spend a year producing signature investigative work focused on your state or region, to be published by The Times.
  • Receive guidance from Dean Baquet and a handpicked group of veteran editors to learn investigative journalism skills.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of The Times’s value of journalistic independence and commitment to its mission.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant experience covering a beat and an idea for an investigative story that hasn't been pursued due to time, resources, or editing support.
  • Ability to bring a new perspective to investigative journalism.
