Requirements

  • Expertise in underwriting authorities, rating, wordings, file documentation, renewal underwriting, and product development processes
  • Ability to perform portfolio analysis, control business segmentation into Product P&Ls, and monitor business retention
  • Proficiency in conducting audits for compliance and correctness every 18-24 months, including peer reviews
  • Skills in reviewing and approving product development, including new products or major changes, in coordination with Regional Actuarial and Legal
  • Experience in case underwriting for large/unusual opportunities (Group Business, Business Travel, VEB, Specialty Markets)
  • Capability to deliver training to underwriters at levels matching their authority and track trainee progress
  • Knowledge of Third Party Administrators (TPA) evaluation processes, requiring UW Regional Office, Regional Legal, and New Jersey sign-offs
  • Strong inter-departmental coordination skills with Operations & Systems, Legal, Claims, and Controller/Financial Departments
  • Ability to provide performance appraisals and comments on subordinates' technical ability against established criteria
  • Willingness to work primarily in the office for in-person collaboration

Responsibilities

  • Maintain Loss Ratio at or below agreed upon levels
  • Perform portfolio analysis, control and segment business into Product P&Ls, and monitor business retention
  • Conduct auditing for compliance, correctness, use of delegated underwriting authorities, rating, wordings, file documentation, renewal underwriting, product development, and peer reviews every 18-24 months; prepare written reports for UW Regional Office review
  • Review and approve product development work or perform it directly; ensure all new products/major changes are approved by Regional Underwriting Manager, Actuarial, and Legal as required, following the Product Development process
  • Review/approve quotes on large and/or unusual market opportunities (Group Business, Business Travel, VEB, Specialty Markets)
  • Ensure proper training for those with underwriting authority and track trainees' progress toward obtaining authority
  • Assist A&H Manager with general SBU issues, important client relationships, and key production issues
  • Ensure appropriate evaluation of Third Party Administrators (TPA); prepare cases for UW Regional Office approval; secure Regional Legal approval for TPA agreements and New Jersey sign-offs as necessary
  • Act as inter-departmental liaison to coordinate with Operations & Systems, Legal, Claims, and Controller/Financial Departments on underwriting and business activities
  • Periodically provide performance appraisals on subordinates' technical ability and performance against established criteria
