They must possess deep knowledge of SaaS billing models, including subscriptions, usage-based pricing, proration, discounts, and entitlements. Proven experience integrating with third-party billing platforms like Stripe or Orb, or building custom billing systems, is essential. Experience designing and managing distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures is required, along with proficiency in SQL and data modeling for financial and usage data. A solid understanding of APIs and experience building or integrating internal billing APIs are necessary. Flexibility to adjust to the dynamic nature of a startup and excellent written and verbal communication skills are also required.

Responsibilities

The Software Engineer will deliver projects related to pricing plans and billing, and develop the billing integration with a third-party service. They will take ownership of the entire product lifecycle, from writing code to product ideation and strategic decision-making, and work closely with UX/UI designers and product managers to shape features. Responsibilities include designing, building, testing, and documenting core billing software components, integrating with third-party billing platforms, and developing metering, pricing, and rating logic for various billing models. They will ensure accurate tracking and reporting of customer usage data, monitor and maintain billing systems, and build automation tools for recurring billing tasks. Collaboration with product, sales, finance, and support teams to support custom billing requirements and accurate billing, revenue reporting, and customer inquiries is key. The engineer will act as a technical expert in billing discussions, champion engineering excellence through code quality and architectural reviews, and provide technical leadership and mentorship.
