Requirements

Doctorate degree highly preferred (DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited program; MD acceptable with significant preclinical experience)
Surgical residency training and board certification (DACVS) preferred
Certification as a Surgical Research Specialist (SRS) through the Academy of Surgical Research may be considered based on experience level
Demonstrated knowledge of surgical principles and theory required
Specific training in cardiovascular procedures required
Ability to function as a primary surgeon with focus on cardiovascular procedures using animate, inanimate, and cadaveric models
Experience in surgical research and testing for standard and minimally invasive surgery (open, laparoscopic, robotic)

Responsibilities

Function as primary surgeon providing surgical expertise and technical leadership for research, development, and evaluation of surgical devices
Conduct and/or direct surgical investigations for product development and preclinical evidence generation
Use scientific and surgical expertise to evaluate functionality, efficacy, and safety of medical devices during acquisition, licensure, discovery, development, and product change evaluations
Provide biomedical expertise and unbiased recommendations to ETHICON teams on new technologies and device-tissue interactions
Provide technical direction and execution within Preclinical Research for surgical investigation and medical device development
Collaborate with Preclinical Research team to apply clinically relevant models for product evaluation, meeting study design, execution, and timeline requirements
Support Preclinical Research team with development of animal models
Communicate business-related issues or opportunities to next management level
If supervising staff, ensure subordinates follow Company Health, Safety, and Environmental guidelines and provide necessary resources
Ensure personal and Company compliance with all Federal, State, local, and Company regulations, policies, and procedures
Know and follow ETHICON policies and procedures related to work activities
Utilize interpersonal skills and collaboration to enhance team processes and drive surgical efficiency/quality within Preclinical Research, ETHICON, and J&J
Function as key Preclinical Research team member by supporting department, ETHICON, and J&J goals and collaborating with external scientific community
Perform other duties as assigned
