Requirements

Candidates should have 4+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 1 year of experience building for consumer-scale loads. A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience, is required. Experience in designing and developing systems to protect platforms, balancing risk and user experience, and architecting event-driven pipelines is preferred. The role requires candidates to be US-based and within commuting distance of Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, or Seattle hubs.

Responsibilities

The Platform Engineer will design and develop systems to protect the platform by building and iterating on production algorithms and infrastructures that mitigate systemic risks and safeguard buyers, sellers, and the Whatnot community. They will balance risk and user experience by monitoring the impact of protective systems on trusted users and ensuring interventions deliver more value than friction. The engineer will respond in real time to threats by architecting event-driven pipelines and detection frameworks that enable near real-time responses to high-risk user behavior. Responsibilities include contributing across the full development lifecycle, from ideation to monitoring, to deliver resilient and scalable solutions. Driving cross-team initiatives through collaboration with multiple product surfaces and operational teams, and surfacing insights to leadership and stakeholders through dashboards, notebooks, and clear written documentation is also expected. The engineer will continuously evolve defenses by staying ahead of emerging abuse patterns, abuse vectors, and account integrity risks through rapid iteration and rigorous testing of solutions.
