The Arts & Culture Hub provides news, discovery, and analysis of arts and culture to a curious audience across digital, radio, podcasts, social platforms, and video. We cover television, film, music, books, the arts, and the internet, enriching our understanding of today's cultural conversations with original reporting and curated initiatives.

The Petra Mayer Memorial Fellowship, established in memory of beloved NPR Books Editor Petra Mayer, supports fellowships within NPR’s Culture News Team. This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to learn the core tenets of public service journalism, media ethics, and multi-platform reporting and producing while gaining hands-on experience with top professionals.

Fellowship Focus

The Petra Mayer Memorial Fellow will focus their term on Books We Love and the Book of the Day podcast, signature NPR products founded by Petra Mayer.

Responsibilities

  • Production, diversity tracking, and research for NPR's annual interactive reading guide, Books We Love.
  • Researching and pulling tape for reporters.
  • Laying up podcasts and pieces.
  • Producing digital pages for stories and reviews.
  • Assisting with diversity tracking of sources and reviewers.
  • Conducting research for critical projects.

Requirements

Required Skills:

  • Basic research
  • Basic reporting and writing
  • Voracious appetite for books and pop culture

Preferred Skills:

  • Basic radio production (ability to edit would be a bonus)
  • Intermediate level of social media proficiency
  • Strong time management

Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience.

Fellowship Details

  • Type: Temporary, full-time position
  • Duration: 20 weeks
  • Work Location: Remote permitted. Based out of our Washington, DC office, but the employee may choose to work remotely from an approved NPR location.
  • Hourly Rate: $27.88 per hour (U.S. based)
