Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in monitoring patient responses, vital signs, weights, and intradialytic problems
Proficiency in dialysis machine programming (e.g., Ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms like Narrow Venous Limits)
Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
Ability to conduct machine safety checks and report changes to RN or supervisor
Capability to obtain laboratory specimens and handle blood spills per policy
Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, reinfusion)
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
Document all treatment-related information and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
Perform machine safety checks, interventions for unusual patient status, and vascular access monitoring
Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and apply dressings/hemostasis
Evaluate patients pre-discharge and maintain safe/clean environment
Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
