Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in monitoring patient responses, vital signs, weights, and intradialytic problems
  • Proficiency in dialysis machine programming (e.g., Ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms like Narrow Venous Limits)
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Ability to conduct machine safety checks and report changes to RN or supervisor
  • Capability to obtain laboratory specimens and handle blood spills per policy
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, reinfusion)
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment-related information and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Perform machine safety checks, interventions for unusual patient status, and vascular access monitoring
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and apply dressings/hemostasis
  • Evaluate patients pre-discharge and maintain safe/clean environment
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
