Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM)
  • Ability to perform vital signs monitoring, weights, pre/post dialysis evaluations, hemostasis, dressings, and blood pressure checks
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Capability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Skills in laboratory specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, supply/equipment organization, and waste prevention
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access patency, cannulate, administer heparin
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per orders, including programming machines for UF goal, time, modeling, and enabling safety alarms
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, document all parameters
  • Perform pre/post dialysis evaluations, record vital signs/treatment data, complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to registered nurse or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), document interventions
  • Obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, organize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision, assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities for patient quality goals
