Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, patency check, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ability to evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and monitor patient response
  • Skills in performing hemostasis, applying dressings, and evaluating patients pre-discharge
  • Proficiency in machine safety checks, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and reporting changes to RN/supervisor
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine checks, and document interventions
  • Skills in vascular access monitoring (arterial/venous pressures) and interventions
  • Ability to obtain laboratory testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulation, and heparin administration
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor response, evaluate intradialytic issues, and intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post evaluations, weight, vital signs
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling) and ensure safety alarms are enabled
  • Record vital signs and parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and complete documentation
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Perform and document machine safety checks and interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, provide interventions, document, and report findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
