Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Skills in vascular access evaluation, patency check, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Ability to obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ability to evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and monitor patient response
Skills in performing hemostasis, applying dressings, and evaluating patients pre-discharge
Proficiency in machine safety checks, enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and reporting changes to RN/supervisor
Ability to observe patients, conduct machine checks, and document interventions
Skills in vascular access monitoring (arterial/venous pressures) and interventions
Ability to obtain laboratory testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulation, and heparin administration
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor response, evaluate intradialytic issues, and intervene as prescribed
Obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post evaluations, weight, vital signs
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling) and ensure safety alarms are enabled
Record vital signs and parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and complete documentation
Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Perform and document machine safety checks and interventions for unusual patient status
Monitor vascular access during treatment, provide interventions, document, and report findings
Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills per policy
Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
