Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Ability to obtain and record pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Competence in initiating, monitoring, evaluating, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
Knowledge of hemostasis, dressing application, and patient discharge evaluation
Ability to document accurately on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Skills in laboratory specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, supply/equipment management, and machine safety checks
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Perform pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
Monitor patients during treatment, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (e.g., standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
Document patient treatment info, interventions, and report changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Monitor vascular access during treatment (arterial/venous pressures) and intervene/report as needed
Obtain prescribed lab tests and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills per policy
Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
