Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education topics including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access
  • Skills in evaluating vascular access for patency, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Ability to obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160) and conducting machine safety checks
  • Accurate documentation skills for vital signs, treatment parameters, Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and interventions
  • Ability to observe patients, evaluate responses, report changes to RN/supervisor, and perform interventions for unusual status
  • Skills in hemostasis, applying dressings, blood spill cleanup, laboratory specimen preparation, and supply/equipment management to prevent wastage
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, including QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene per physician orders
  • Obtain vital signs pre-reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post evaluations
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks
  • Document vital signs, treatment parameters, interventions, and patient responses on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet/progress notes
  • Report significant information or patient condition changes to RN/supervisor
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions for vascular access, and report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
