Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, including programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Ability to obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluations
  • Proficiency in monitoring patients during treatment, evaluating intradialytic problems, and providing interventions as prescribed
  • Capability to perform laboratory testing preparation, specimen collection, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, pre/post evaluations, weights, and ensure accurate documentation with initial identification
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Monitor patient response, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Perform interventions for intradialytic issues, vascular access monitoring (arterial/venous pressures), hemostasis, and dressings
  • Evaluate patients prior to discharge and document responses to interventions
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs under RN supervision
  • Support maintenance of safe and clean working environment
