Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, patency check, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Proficiency in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Accurate documentation skills (Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, vital signs, treatment parameters)
  • Observation and machine safety check abilities
  • Capability to perform laboratory testing preparation and specimen collection
  • Knowledge of hemostasis, dressings, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access
  • Obtain pre/post vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, and intervene for intradialytic problems
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain reinfusion vital signs, evaluate patient, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment-related information and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, provide interventions, and report findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab tests and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment to prevent waste
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
